Collin Rayland

 "Sery"

Collin Rayland grew up in the city of Waterdeep.  His father owns a small tavern, called Rayland's, which he and Collin's mother run. The Tavern kept food in Collin's belly and coin in his pocket, but it didn't keep him out of trouble. Collin's parents had to work so much that there was little time left to supervise the littlest Sery.  He was always getting into trouble, from fights with other boys, to trying to steal pies from windows.  Along the way he started in with a couple kids in the theives guild, and before he knew it he was a muscle for a small time hood.

From there things only got worse, when his parents found out what his new job was they kicked him out, hoping he would stop and return to them.  Instead Collin joined up with small group of bandits and left town.  His time as a robber was smooth sailing, they always seemed to be one step ahead of their prey. and continued like this for almost two years.  It was late afternoon on a Wednesday, they had heard from a conact in town that a small caravan of full goods was to be arriving east of their location that very night, it was too good to pass up, not many guards, and it was so close to their camp, not even two hours ride away.  They followed the road to the caravan, which was found abandoned, not a soul around.  When they went to check for cargo they found empty boxes and a back full arrows.

Collin awoke in a cell.  He and a few others were the only ones who were still alive.  The other told him that they were ambushed, and that they were to be hung for their crimes.  They were given one nights rest before they went to the gallows.  That night Collin dreamt. He saw the noose, the executioner, and his comrades already swaying.  The executioner told him that there was a way out, that he didn't have to go, and that all Collin had to do was accept the offer, and do what they bid of him when the time came.  Collin didn't know who they were, or what their price was, but he accepted it.

The following morning he and the rest prisoners were marched through the crowd of angry men and women, who pelted them with rocks, vegetables, and whatever else was handy at the time.  They were led up the wooden stairs onto the gallows.  They were lined up shoulder to shoulder.  To the left of them was the executioner: he would be overseeing the hanging, to make sure everything went smooth.  One by one the executioner walked up to them and put a gag in their mouths.  These men killed and robbed without mercy, last words were not something they were going to have.  The executioner smelled of onions and stink that made the made the gag essential for not throwing up.  One by one he dropped the men to their deaths, and with each snap of the noose the crowd cheered more and more.  Collin was the last to go.  The last thing he remembers seeing was the executioner's wink.

The unlucky men whose neck did not snap when they dropped were left hanging until they died.  Once all the men had died, they took the bodies and threw them into the swamp in the back of the town to be eaten by the animals and other creatures that inhabited the water.

The last thing he remembered was the wink, and thinking that maybe it all wasn't a dream.  There was sense of total weightlessness, followed by a sudden jerk around his neck, then nothing.  He awoke on the bank of the swamp, he wasn't sure how he lived, or if he was alive at all.  He did know that he needed to to flee this swamp and town fast, before they found out they didn't kill him and decided to finish the job.  He was going to return to his family and start anew, no more crime.  He would work for his father again.  Maybe someday if he worked hard enough his children would do the same.

Along the way home he stole clothes, and food. He was going to start clean at at least needed to look clean, not like something that just crawled out a swamp.  When he got to Waterdeep, it was just how remembered it, except no one rememered him.  He practically grew up with everyone in his neighborhood, and still nobody could remember his face.  When he told people his name was Collin, they just told him about a boy named Collin who became a murderous bandit who was hung and got what deserved.  Collin made his way to the inn, not knowing what to think of his once friends and aquaintances.  When Collin arrived at Rayland's, he was greeted by his father with a simple "Hello, sir. Anything I can do ya fer today?"

"Do you now remember my face?" Collin said to his father.

"No, should I?  We have a lot of young fellows come through here, but if you've stayed here before then you know our beds are warm and cost is fair."

"Look closer, good innkeeper, do I not look a little bit like maybe someone form your past?"

"Hmmm, nope.  Ma, come in here and take a look at this young lad, he says he knows me"  yelled the father to the back.  Out came Collin's mother.  She looked almost the same, a few grey hairs here and there, but still the same.  She walked up to Collin, and for a second he thought she recognized him.

"Huh, you know I can't say where I've seen your face before, but I'm sure i've seen it...were you in here last week looking for work?" she asked.

"Yes, ma'am I was, and I practically grew up in an inn."

"What was your name again, lad?" his father asked.

"Sery, call me Sery."

So from that day on Collin Rayland was known as Sery.  He worked at the inn doing odd jobs, and had no problem working there, as he had done all his life... well, his last life anyway.  He'd actually managed to save up a good ammount of coin.  He wasn't sure what happened those months ago, or if the dream was real, but he was happy.  The Rayland's grew very fond of Sery, he was like the son they never had, or had but didn't want.  They told him about the son they had, Collin was his name.  He sounded like a monster, a spoiled ungrateful brat who took everything for granted and never gave a thing back.

Sery enjoyed the closing up part of his job the best.  He just locked all the doors and swept, washed some plates and cups, and then it was off to bed.  When he got to his room one night, he swore he saw something large and black jump out of his room and into the street bellow.  He rushed to the window and saw nothing, like it was never there. That's when he noticed the smell of rank onions in the air.  The very next day he told the Rayland's goodbye and bought himself a sword, shield and armor, along enough food and supplies to get him going.
