Landriel Celebrin

Human Transmuter

Landriel Celebrin remembers nothing of her parents.  In fact, she remembers nothing of her life before she woke in a dark alley of Waterdeep with crusted blood running down her forehead.  She wondered around the huge city for days before she came across Kipp.  Kipp had tried to take advantage of a “tourist” and picked her pockets for a few gold, but finding nothing noticed that Landriel seemed to be truly lost.  He took pity on her and decided he could teach her how to survive in Waterdeep, for a fee of course.  He taught her that drunken men leaving taverns at night were her best bet.  They almost never noticed a small agile little girl stealing a few gold from their pouches.  And if they did, Landriel had become quite skilled at ducking under their legs and rolling out of danger.  She gave all her ill-gotten gains to Kipp, who made sure she had somewhere to sleep and food in her stomach.

This went on for about a year before Landriel made a huge mistake.  An old man stumbled out of the tavern one night.  He seemed to be rummaging through the many pouches he kept on his belt and he was stumbling about quite a bit. Landriel took him for just another drunk, and proceeded as normal to bump into him and snatch what she needed.   She failed to notice that the components in the pouches where herbs that he was sorting through, and that he was not drunk, just distracted.  For most, being caught pickpocketing a mage would be a very painful experience, but in Landriel’s case it was not so.  The old man pondered turning her in, but decided that just wouldn’t do.  And since there was no family to return the little street urchin to, he decided he could find better use for her.  So started Landriel’s life of constant chores.

Artilus Celebrin, as was the old man’s name, lived miles out of town in a rather large house.  He kept Landriel very busy with day to day chores. Landriel didn’t mind too much.  She had never slept in a real bed or a real house before, so as far as “punishment” went she decided the old man didn’t know what he was doing. Artilus slowly took a fondness towards Landriel, and even began reading her bedtime stories at the end of her busy day.  He found it odd that she was so intrigued by stories of history that he would read her.  She would even ask for the same story night after night.  What he didn’t realize is that she had memorized these stories by heart, and while he was off to town, she would attempt to decipher the script he had read from for herself.  She did this because she thought it would help her find out what was in the other books that he read for so long, but never to her.  To even her surprise, this worked.  She had taught herself to read in only a few months.

She gained the courage to attempt to read the big book that Artilus was always studying.  After reading the first page, she said it out loud to see if it would make more sense that way.  A sudden bright light appeared throughout the room, and at the same time Artilus came walking through the study door. Artilus eyes opened wide as Landriel felt her heart stop.  What kind of chores would she have to do as punishment for this?  To her surprise, Artilus set her down and placed a book in front of her.  “Read this outloud”, he said.  To his surprise she read very clear and precise.  That was the day Artilus decided Landriel was better suited for something other than manual labor.

Artilus taught Landriel much about the art of magic. Landriel’s studies were fueled purely by curiosity. Artilus noticed that most of the spells she wanted to learn were purely for exploration purposes.  Such as enhancing her ability to climb the tallest tree nearby or his roof, just to see what’s up there.  Of course he wasn’t surprised at all one day when she jumped from the tallest pine, and at last minute began to float down to the ground. Artilus could see the true potential in Landriel, and knew that (insert university) would be the best place for her to discover this potential. Landriel was sad to be parted from Artilus, who had essentially become her father throughout the years, but she was excited to be going to a new and different place.

On her last day there, Artilus gave her two gifts.  The first was a beautiful silver oak leaf broach.  A silver oak leaf was a symbol of the Celebrin family, and symbol of Artilus’ love for her as his daughter.  He also gave her a beautiful silver ring that he knew she had her eye on ever since the day she arrived at his home.  The ring was crafted to look like a tiny thing of vines woven together into a ring.  He did not bother to tell her that the ring was enchanted.  He knew she liked surprises, and knew that it would bring her joy when she found out, most likely by accident, someday.
