"Ahem" a small gruff voice called
out from the darkness.
The drunks around the bar, looked around in
confusion.
"Listen all whist I tell you a tale of Kings," the voice continued
"Our tale begins as so many seem to."
"Oi, whas all that then?" one of the
drunken thugs began.
"Down here." the voice
answered.
"Wha?"
"Down here, you big drunk oaf!"
The drunks
finally looked down. What they saw was a strange contraption comprised of brass,
bronze, and wire entangling a weird yellow bag wearing a sagging ashen
hat.
"Hey gents, looks like some wizard box is speakin' to us."
"No,
behind the accordion," the voice retorted "Now, if I may continue my tale? Our
tale begins as so many-"
"Oi, chaps ye right! It is a wizard's speakin'
box!"
At that, the speak stepped into view. He was a hideously rotund little
hairy gnome in a floppy yellow hat, and mustard top-coat with a beard that
reached down to the floor. ".in a tavern, our story begins in a tavern," he
tried to continue as he drew a strange little bronze pipe shaped like a dragon's
mouth. "What, no more interruptions?" he asked threateningly, "Right, then on
with the story.before I have to shoot you!"
"Uh, gee fellas, looks like we
have our selves a wizard."
The gnome quickly thrust his weird little pipe at
his audience, and nothing spectacular happened, at which he said "Damn, I must
have forgotten to load it!"
Polkarth Poindexter is a 5 foot eleven inch tall sixty
pound gnome, dwarfed by the grand gnomish accordion that he carries lashed to
his chest. He prefers the to wear garments that remind him of home, far off
Lantan, and inexplicably has them dyed bright yellow. He is descended from a
long line of entertainers, his mother is the acclaimed gnomish actress Madam
Charlotte Brochette-Arquette the 4th, his father is a fairly wealthy patron of
the arts and minor (but wealthy) guild illusionist from Lantan specializing in
the detection of forgeries, and fakes (the Esteemed Guildmaster Valveroto
Poindexter).
The second son of three brothers and four sisters
(some left over from his fathers previous marriages, others adopted). He was
raised on stories of the theater, and has his misspent his youth learning
drinking songs, and getting into trouble with the local authorities (which he
runs to at the first sign of trouble, figuring he'll find a way to buy justice
sooner or later). After the last incident, he practically destroyed a very
expensive Haltan singing stone that his fathers guildsmen had imported at great
expense. His father had him sent away to school, specifically the Bardic College
of Canaith in Tethyr, far away from home where a combination of his petulant
pranks, and his families money, kept him from graduating from for over 60 years,
what with the eleven expulsions, if it wasn't for his families money he probably
would never have graduated at all.
His attendance has stabilized Polkarth a
little and he now wishes to complete his bardic education by attending all the
Bardic Colleges in the realms. In order: Fochlucan, Mac-Fuirmidh, Doss, Canaith,
Cli, Anstruth, Ollamh, Manga Alumnae. This would require him to re-attend his
alma mater for a dozen semesters, but he's sure he'll be influential enough by
then to convince the elder bards, to remove that ban on his attendance, the
flood was just a joke after-all.
