Farmers' Gate

 (8)

The main gate leading from Farmers’ Road into town passes through this gate, which is almost always open.  The gate itself is sixty feet tall, as are the granite walls surrounding the city.  The front gate is also within range of the guard post a short distance away.  The guards cycle between the post and the gate on regular shifts.

A large mechanical pulley on top of the wall itself opens and closes the large wood and iron gates.  Guarding this device, as well as the gates themselves, are three squads of archers, one of which is an elite sniper unit of ten.  On the ground are the foot soldiers, and a lieutenant is always present.

Posted near the gate, on an island of grass in the middle of the road is a signpost with announcements, wanted posters, and a large sheaf of parchment which bear the laws of the small city.  Listed are obvious laws about robbery, murder, and so forth.  Some local laws are in effect, however.

1)      Weapons must be peacebound at all times on public lands and roads.

2)      Casting spells affecting an area while not on private property is forbidden.

3)      Casting spells against an unwilling target is forbidden.

4)      “Deadly poisons” of all types are forbidden from being sold in the city.

5)      Undead are not allowed on public lands and roads.

6)      An animal’s handler is responsible for its actions.

7)      Littering is strictly prohibited.

8)      Sale of slaves is prohibited in the city.

9)  Slaves are only permitted in Phent for a period of one week, before they must set foot again on foreign soil.

11)  Those residing in the city must pay a 15% tax while living within city limits, or in an incorporated farming region adjacent to the city.
